On April 22, as the foregoer of domestic sponge cities, “2016 Technical Forum on Construction of Sponge City” cosponsored by STEC SUCDRI, Shanghai Institute of Traffic Engineering and Shanghai Water Reclamation Trade Association was held in Shanghai. This Forum gathered specialists, scholars and managers from many scientific research institutions including Tongji University, Shanghai Ocean University and University of Washington etc. and construction enterprises in the industry to jointly talk about difficulties and challenges in construction of sponge city, think about preparation of special program of sponge city, share experience from pilot in Zhenjiang, Suining and Jiaxing, and learn from low-influence development of US and Australia. STEC SUCDRI shared its research achievements in the construction of sponge city on site.
STEC Builds Taopu “Spongebob”
During the “Thirteenth Five-year Plan”, districts and counties throughout Shanghai will construct at least one sponge city construction pilot area. In terms of area, the pilot area of the central urban area shall not be less than one rainwater drainage system and the pilot area in other areas shall not be less than 2 square kilometers. As one of the three main regions carrying out sponge city construction pilot in Shanghai, Taopu Smart City of Science and Technology is the only one region located in the central urban area and it is experiencing industrial transformation and upgrading now. In the meanwhile, the implementation scheme of construction of sponge city of Taopu is prepared by STEC SUCDRI.
The general thought of the Taopu “Spongebob”, which is being created by SUCDRI now, is green plus gray. Green means giving play to functions of “permeation, stagnating and storage” of the green space system by utilizing the higher ratio of green space of the Smart City Taopu fully so as to reduce the direct drainage of rainwater. Gray means improving the standard of the urban rainwater system and improving the ecological environment of this area by integrating pipe galleries and drainage networks etc.
SUCDRI will also organize more than 100 Sponge City Projects from the planning level combining with the urban design scheme of Taopu Smart City of Science and Technology to carry out customized design schemes respectively aiming at implementation of newly-built area, river water system, residential quarter, public buildings, urban green space square, road and drainage project.
STEC Makes “Sponge” More Effective
In fact, as early as five years ago, STEC carried out research on scientific problem tackling and application from the perspective of the actual conditions of the urban development in our country. STEC prepared the “comprehensive planning on urban drainage (rainwater) water logging prevention of Zhenjiang City” for the earlier stage of construction in Zhenjiang City of Jiangsu Province. This planning makes the pilot area achieve the control rate of annual runoff volume of 74%, control rate of initial rainwater pollution of 60% under the premise of guaranteeing not to change the existing drainage pipe network system of the pilot area and thus reaching the goal of Zhenjiang’s construction of Sponge City.
In the design research, successful use of the new type stereoscopic turbine gutter inlet designed by SUCDRI in Eshan Road of Pudong solved the gutter inlet’s problem in water drainage due to blockage by rubbish; STEC has designed many rainwater regulation and storage facilities successively in these engineering projects including pollution control of water of Suzhou River, Shanghai World Expo, Anhui Chaohu Lake basin and Hunan Xiangjiang River Basin etc. Moreover, STEC’s advanced design philosophy and technology have been popularized and used in many regions such as Jiaxing, Tianjin, Zhenjiang and Wuxi etc.
