Guangdong Zhaoqing Yuejiang Bridge, a super-large bridge undertaken by STEC, open to traffic

On August 8, after over 1,700 days and nights of construction, Zhaoqing Yuejiang Bridge undertaken by STEC Shanghai Road and Bridge (Group) Co., Ltd. was finally open to traffic, marking a historic moment. Vice governor of Guangdong province Xu Ruisheng, secretary of CPC Zhaoqing Municipal Party Committee Lai Zehua, vice secretary and acting mayor of Zhaoqing Fan Zhongjie and other leaders of CPC Zhaoqing Municipal Party Committee and Zhaoqing municipal government attended the ceremony.

 

Yuejiang Bridge, with a total length of 3.837 kilometers and a width of 33.5 meters, is built with an investment of RMB1.297 billion and adopts two-way six-lane. Its main bridge is a 2.355-kilometer-long double pylon cable-stayed bridge and its main span is 320 meters wide. The bridge now carries over one third of Zhaoqing’s traffic crossing the Xijiang River. It is of great significance to build Zhaoqing into a big city with a population of over 5 million which contains five districts on both banks of the Xijiang River, and to promote the city’s expansion and improvement.

 

The largest “sail-shaped” main pylon cable-stayed bridge in China

Zhaoqing Yuejiang Bridge is the widest single cable plane prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridge in China, with 192 steel cables on both sides of the pylons. With a height of 83.8 meters, the unique sail-shaped steel and concrete composite pylon structure is rare in large bridges. It means the developing Zhaoqing is setting sail for a long voyage.

 

This is the first time that BIM is applied to the construction of a long-span bridge in China

Zhaoqing Yuejiang Bridge is the first bridge to which BIM is applied in long-span bridge construction in China. Since 2013 when construction of the bridge commenced, STEC Shanghai Road and Bridge (Group) Co., Ltd. has constantly perfected its skill and optimized each construction process, ranging from the 3D simulation of the whole construction process, the construction design of trestle platform, the simulation of placing steel coffer for main pier, to control of quality by scanning the main pylon with laser and study of the condition of hanging basket construction.

 

Super-large bridge on KARST landform

The project team of STEC Shanghai Road and Bridge (Group) Co., Ltd., by innovating construction technologies and working plans, has overcome such problems like complicated Karst landform and hydrological conditions at the river bottom as well as environmental protection. As a result, it has not only built the bridge, but protected the ecological environment of the Xijiang River.
